The Gunslinger (The Dark Tower, Book 1) Overview

Eerie, dreamlike, set in a world that is weirdly related to our own, The Gunslinger introduces Roland Deschain of Gilead, of In-World that was, as he pursues his enigmatic antagonist to the mountains that separate the desert from the Western Sea. Roland is a solitary figure, perhaps accursed, who with a strange singlemindedness traverses an exhausted, almost timeless landscape. The people he encounters are left behind, or worse—left dead. At a way station, however, he meets Jake, a boy from a particular time (1977) and a particular place (New York City), and soon the two are joined—khef, ka, and ka-tet. The mountains lie before them. So does the man in black and, somewhere far beyond...the Dark Tower.

The Gunslinger (The Dark Tower, Book 1) Specifications

Thirty-three years, a horrific and life-altering accident, and thousands of desperately rabid fans in the making, Stephen King's quest to complete his magnum opus rivals the quest of Roland and his band of gunslingers who inhabit the Dark Tower series. Loyal DT fans and new readers alike will appreciate this revised edition of The Gunslinger, which breathes new life into Roland of Gilead, and offers readers a "clearer start and slightly easier entry into Roland's world."

King writes both a new introduction and foreword to this revised edition, and the ever-patient, ever-loyal "constant reader" is rewarded with secrets to the series's inception. That a "magic" ream of green paper and a Robert Browning poem, came together to reveal to King his "ka" is no real surprise (this is King after all), but who would have thought that the squinty-eyed trio of Clint Eastwood, Lee Van Cleef, and Eli Wallach would set the author on his true path to the Tower? While King credits Tolkien for inspiring the "quest and magic" that pervades the series, it was Sergio Leone's The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly that helped create the epic proportions and "almost absurdly majestic western backdrop" of Roland's world.

To King, The Gunslinger demanded revision because once the series was complete it became obvious that "the beginning was out of sync with the ending." While the revision adds only 35 pages, Dark Tower purists will notice the changes to Allie's fate and Roland's interaction with Cort, Jake, and the Man in Black--all stellar scenes that will reignite the hunger for the rest of the series. Newcomers will appreciate the details and insight into Roland's life. The revised Roland of Gilead (nee Deschain) is embodied with more humanity--he loves, he pities, he regrets. What DT fans might miss is the same ambiguity and mystery of the original that gave the original its pulpy underground feel (back when King himself awaited word from Roland's world). --Daphne Durham

The first step to setting up more than one iPod on iTunes is to assign each iPod in your house a different name. That way, the iTunes schedule can absolutely tell one from the others. It may seem simple, but it's important.

After you've picked out a name for the first iPod, you'll need to pick the menu labeled "manually conduct music" and make sure you've checked the box next to it. That will guarantee that iTunes doesn't add all the household songs to every iPod.

Next, assign each iPod it's own playlist. That means that you'll have to give each playlist a unique name. You should make sure that the names you pick make sense to every person in the house. That way, you will all be able to tell which playlist belongs to which person. To assign a name to a playlist, just right click and pick the "rename" option from the menu.

Next, drag songs that you want to each playlist. That will generate individual song libraries for each iPod. If you add new songs to iTunes, you will have to drag them to the suitable house members' playlists.

The next steps to set up more than one iPod on iTunes are easy. Now you'll just have to be sure to sync each iPod. Open the iPod window in iTunes and then pick "music". Next, click on "selected playlists". You need to sync definite playlists to each iPod, whenever that iPod is connected to your computer.

After that, you're nearly done. Just sync each iPod and then go back to the main iTunes page. Once there, you just need to uncheck the box you checked before that says "manually manage" and you're set. Every iPod should sync to its own playlist automatically from now on. So, setting up more than one iPod on iTunes is both easy and beneficial.
